Backup Agent Installation
The DataRunsClouds backup agent runs on your computers to perform backups. It's a lightweight application available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Downloading the Agent
The easiest way to get the backup agent is through your dashboard:
- Log in to your account at app.datarunsclouds.com
- Navigate to the Download page
- Select your operating system
- Click Download Agent
Automatic Registration
When you download the agent from your dashboard, it includes a registration token that automatically links the agent to your company. The token is valid for 24 hours.
Windows Installation
- Run the downloaded
pugworks-backup-agent-windows.zip
- Extract the contents to a folder
- Run
install.bat as Administrator
- Follow the installation wizard
- The agent will automatically start and register with your account
Windows System Tray
The agent runs in the system tray. Right-click the icon to:
- View backup status
- Start a manual backup
- Open settings
- Check for updates
macOS Installation
- Download the appropriate version (Intel or Apple Silicon)
- Open the downloaded
.tar.gz file
- Drag the application to your Applications folder
- Open the application and grant necessary permissions
- The agent will appear in your menu bar
macOS Permissions
You'll need to grant Full Disk Access in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Full Disk Access for the agent to back up all your files.
Linux Installation
- Download the Linux package (
.tar.gz)
- Extract the archive:
tar -xzf pugworks-backup-agent-linux.tar.gz
cd pugworks-backup-agent
./install.sh
- The installer will set up the agent as a system service
- The agent will start automatically on boot
Linux Service Management
# Check status
systemctl status pugworks-backup
# Start the service
sudo systemctl start pugworks-backup
# Stop the service
sudo systemctl stop pugworks-backup
# View logs
journalctl -u pugworks-backup -f
Agent Registration
Agents register automatically when downloaded from your dashboard. If you need to manually register an agent:
- Open the agent settings
- Enter your registration code (found in your dashboard)
- Click Register
Registration Token
The registration token is displayed on the Download page in your dashboard. It:
- Is valid for 24 hours
- Can be used for multiple agents
- Automatically assigns agents to your company
Verifying Installation
After installation, verify the agent is working:
- Check the agent is running (system tray/menu bar icon)
- Log in to your dashboard
- Navigate to the Dashboard - you should see your new agent listed
- The agent status should show as "Active"
Uninstalling the Agent
Windows
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps
- Find "PugWorks Backup Agent"
- Click Uninstall
macOS
- Quit the agent from the menu bar
- Drag the application from Applications to Trash
- Empty Trash
Linux
sudo systemctl stop pugworks-backup
sudo systemctl disable pugworks-backup
sudo rm -rf /opt/pugworks-backup
Troubleshooting
Agent Not Connecting
- Check your internet connection
- Verify firewall allows outbound HTTPS (port 443)
- Check the registration token hasn't expired (24 hours)
Agent Shows Inactive
- Ensure the agent service is running
- Check for error messages in the logs
- Restart the agent service
